This Developmentoring series is highly practical and places a strong emphasis on applying knowledge, with a particular focus on community development.
Community development from a wholistic Christian perspective is the process of empowering individuals, families, and communities to flourish in every area of life—spiritually, socially, economically, emotionally, and physically—rooted in the values of the Kingdom of God. It is an incarnational and participatory approach that mirrors the ministry of Jesus, seeking the restoration of broken relationships: with God, oneself, others, and creation.
Kent will guide us through seven stages of development that “begin with the end in mind”.
Wholistic Christian development goes beyond charity or short-term relief, aiming instead for lasting transformation centred on justice, reconciliation, and sustainable empowerment. At its heart is the belief that every person is made in the image of God, with inherent dignity, purpose, and potential. It highlights the importance of listening to local voices, building capacity, addressing systemic injustice, and fostering shalom—a state of peace, wellbeing, and wholeness.
In practical terms, this may include initiatives in education, healthcare, economic development, environmental stewardship, spiritual formation, and advocacy—always integrated with the message of the Gospel and driven by love, humility, and hope.
Ultimately, wholistic Christian community development seeks to reflect God’s heart for the poor and marginalised, nurturing communities where people can thrive in right relationship with God and with one another.
