Pray for Cities of Influence

City Snapshot

Overview

Lagos, Nigeria’s economic powerhouse is Africa’s most populous city and home to over 17 million. Nestled along the Atlantic coast, it drives Nigeria’s commerce, tech, and entertainment scenes, influencing West Africa through its ports and markets. The lively chaos of street vendors and high-rises blending with the ocean breeze forms a gateway for ideas and people.  The city is a melting pot of cultures.

Spiritual Landscape

Spiritually, Lagos reflects Nigeria’s diverse faith landscape, with Christians making up around 60% of the population, including an evangelical presence at about 25%. Yet challenges persist, from interfaith tensions to occasional restrictions on religious expression. The south of the country faces less violence than the north. Mosques and churches stand side by side, but evangelism can spark opposition. A key Unreached People Group  in Lagos is the Hausa, who often run markets and trade networks that are vital to the city’s economy. The Hausa remain largely unreached, with less than 2% believers and minimal Christian witness amid their Islamic heritage.

Community Focus

Our community focus is on the Media, and our mini-theme is the Film Industry, popularly known as Nollywood. Nollywood is Nigeria’s film industry, producing thousands of movies yearly that shape narratives across Africa. It offers fertile ground for Christian discipleship, where stories can spark faith conversations, influencing local viewers and regional audiences through relatable tales of hope and transformation.

Prayer Focus

Joining God’s Work

In Lagos, the Spirit of God is not far away, but He is here, actively working in the lives of people. As Christians, our task is not to initiate a new work but to partner with the Spirit in what He is already doing. God’s at work through Disciple Making Movements starting with relational evangelism: simple, friendship-based faith-sharing that multiplies naturally. In Lagos, this means believers building trust in everyday chats, like over a film script, to lead others to Jesus.

Stories of Change

  • Illustrative Story: Tolu stared at the script in his hands. The film’s expectations were high, but the story felt empty. He’d landed the part of a struggling young artist, a role that hit a little too close to home. Lately, he’d felt lost, despite his success. After a long day at work, he found himself talking to Sarah, a lighting technician who always seemed to have a quiet peace about her. Sarah didn’t try to evangelise him, but she simply listened as he talked about his struggles. She shared how her faith had given her a sense of purpose beyond her career, and it was in that vulnerable moment that Tolu saw something different and began a journey of seeking God.
  • Verified Story: In 2024, YWAM Media Village Nigeria empowered young creators in Lagos to produce faith-inspired content, like a short film series on redemption that reached thousands online, fostering community discussions on God’s grace amid urban challenges.

Let’s Pray For…

  • Relational Evangelism in Nollywood: Pray for Christians working in the Nollywood film industry to be bold and authentic in their faith, building genuine relationships that open doors for the gospel.
  • Moral Transformation: Ask God to purify the content of Nollywood films, turning their stories toward themes of hope, justice, and redemption that reflect God’s kingdom.
  • Spiritual Protection: Pray for the safety and spiritual flourishing of the Hausa people, many of whom still follow traditional beliefs, that they would encounter the living God.
  • Financial Integrity: Pray against corruption and piracy that plague the industry, and for fair and just practices that honor God.
  • A New Generation of Filmmakers: Pray for the next generation of storytellers in Lagos to be filled with the Holy Spirit, using their creative gifts to glorify God and inspire change.

City Snapshot

Overview

Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore), often called the “Silicon Valley of India,” is a bustling city of over 12 million people. Known for its thriving IT industry, world-class universities, and cosmopolitan culture, it is a hub for technology and education across South Asia. The city blends modern skyscrapers with ancient temples, busy markets, and vibrant festivals like the Deepavali festival. This Hindu festival is celebrated with lamps and fireworks and symbolises light overcoming darkness—a fitting image for praying God’s hope into the city. This unique mix of tradition and innovation makes Bengaluru a key city influencing the future of India’s education and technology sectors.

Spiritual Landscape

Bengaluru’s religious tapestry is diverse: 79% Hindu, 14% Muslim, 5% Christian (1% evangelical), and smaller Jain and Sikh communities. A significant Unreached People Group here is the Kuruba community, traditionally shepherds, who now contribute to the city’s workforce but are hardly exposed to the Gospel. Churches face challenges of cultural resistance and growing secularisation, yet pockets of young believers are active in student and tech communities.

Community Focus – Education (Technology Education)

Bengaluru is a global centre for technology education, with universities and coding institutes. Students and young professionals trained here often influence technology sectors across Asia and beyond. This makes the city strategic for discipleship through education, equipping future leaders with both knowledge and faith.

Prayer Focus

Joining God’s Work

When we pray for Bengaluru, we join God’s heart for students and young innovators shaping tomorrow’s world. Let’s pray for bold breakthroughs in technology education that will open doors for gospel-centred transformation across India.

Stories of Change

  • Verified Story: In 2024, a Christian student group at a Bengaluru tech institute began hosting study sessions blending faith and coding. One student, wrestling with doubt, found hope through a friend’s quiet witness, joining a small Bible study (YWAM India Report, 2024). Amid laptops and coffee, God’s love wove new connections.
  • Illustrative Story: Priya, a 22-year-old coder, felt isolated in Bengaluru’s fast-paced tech world. During Deepavali, a Christian classmate invited her to a lamp-lighting event, sharing Jesus’ love over chai. By the festival’s glow, Priya began exploring faith, joining a discreet prayer group.

Let’s Pray For…

  • Students in Bengaluru’s universities and coding academies to encounter Jesus in authentic friendships.
  • The Kuruba people to experience Christ’s compassion woven into their daily lives.
  • Young believers in tech fields to share faith with courage and creativity.
  • Growth of Disciple Making Movementss through student-led Bible studies, multiplying disciples across Bengaluru’s campuses.

Pray with a friend this week specifically for India’s students, and watch how God weaves your intercession into His story of hope.

City Snapshot

Overview

Naypyidaw, Myanmar’s capital since 2005, is a vast yet quiet city, spanning roughly 7,000 km² with a population of approximately 815,000. Built from scratch in the early 2000s, it symbolizes the military’s vision of central authority, its name meaning “Seat of Kings.” Unlike the bustling former capital, Yangon, Naypyidaw functions primarily as a sterile administrative hub. The Uppatasanti Pagoda—a hollow replica of Yangon’s Shwedagon—serves as its cultural anchor.

Since the 2021 military coup, the city’s manufactured calm has been shattered by the broader civil war. While it remains a heavily fortified seat of power, it is no longer insulated from the conflict. Daring drone strikes on military sites by resistance forces have increasingly pressured its outskirts. Even traditional celebrations like Thingyan (the Water Festival) have been muted.  Today, Naypyidaw stands as a stark monument to the tension between state architecture and a nation in revolt.

Spiritual Landscape

Myanmar is a deeply religious nation, with roughly 88% of the population identifying as Buddhist. In the capital, Naypyidaw, this is even higher at 96.8%, with Christians (1.1%) and Muslims (2.1%) forming small minorities. The city remains a spiritual center, home to over 10,000 Buddhist monks. However, religious freedom is increasingly fragile; Christians have faced severe persecution and displacement since the 2021 coup.

The Rakhine people remain a predominantly Buddhist ethnic group and a primary Unreached People Group (UPG), with a Christian presence of less than 0.1%. They hold significant cultural and administrative influence and gospel access remains minimal. For the Rakhine, Buddhist faith is the core of their ethnic identity, making them one of the most resistant groups to religious change in the region today.

Community Focus:

Government – National Policies

“In Naypyidaw, governance isn’t just a part of the city—it is the very reason for its existence. Because the city was built to be the ‘Seat of Kings,’ our prayer focus shifts to the national policies that flow from its center. We are interceding for the lawmakers, the ministries, and the leaders who shape Myanmar’s future, recognising that government is a key sphere of influence.

Policies can either open doors for justice or lock them tight; therefore, we ask God to move through these corridors of power, establishing Christ as the cornerstone of all good governance.

Prayer Focus

Joining God’s Work

Our prayers are not just whispers; they are an invitation to join in the bold breakthroughs God is already orchestrating. We’re joining God’s relational mission to see His love spread into every policy, every law, and every leader’s heart.

Stories of Change

  • Verified Story: In 2023, a young civil servant quietly began hosting prayer meetings in his government housing block. Despite surveillance, his group grew to 12 believers, including two from Buddhist backgrounds
  • Illustrative Story: Kyaw, a university graduate, now working in the Ministry of Education, found hope through a colleague’s testimony. Over shared tea and quiet conversations, she began exploring the gospel, her heart stirred by the idea of God’s love written on every heart, even in policy halls.

Let’s Pray For…

  1. Rakhine UPG – Pray for open hearts among the Rakhine people and for indigenous missionaries to reach them.
  2. Christian civil servants – Ask for courage, wisdom, and protection as they live out their faith.
  3. Policy transformation – Intercede for national policies that reflect justice, compassion, and inclusion.
  4. Disciple Making Movements (DMM)  – Pray for relational evangelism and discipleship to flourish in government zones and among young professionals.
  5. Regional influence – Ask God to use Naypyidaw’s strategic position to impact surrounding regions with gospel-centered leadership.

Get Involved from Home

  • Join a Prayer Collective: Start a small prayer group with friends on a social media platform. Commit to praying for Naypyidaw, focusing on government-related prayer points.
  • Engage with the Mission: Follow organizations like Open Doors, YWAM, and CSW on social media. Real-time updates are vital for understanding how the ongoing civil war is impacting believers. Sharing their posts isn’t just “scrolling”—it’s a form of digital advocacy that breaks the “information blockade” often imposed on Naypyidaw.
  • Pray with a Purpose: Choose one government ministry in Myanmar—like the Ministry of Education or Health—and commit to praying for its staff and leaders for the next week. Search online for their current initiatives and pray for the gospel to spread.
  • Write to your political local representative: Ask them to support increased humanitarian aid that bypasses the military junta to reach displaced ethnic minorities.

Keep Praying!

Don’t let your prayers for Naypyidaw end here. Our collective intercession has the power to see radical shifts in society. Keep praying for a harvest of new disciples in the government sphere, that they would multiply and form new communities of faith.
