Contextualisation and Mission

In this short series Lindy will challenge and inspire us as he discusses “contextualisation”

Contextualisation in cross-cultural missions is the process of communicating the Gospel in ways that are meaningful and relevant within a specific cultural context, without compromising the core truth of the Gospel.

From a Christian perspective, contextualisation involves faithfully presenting the message of Christ while adapting language, customs, and methods to fit the cultural setting of the people being reached. This mirrors the example of Jesus, who entered human culture as God incarnate, speaking the language and living among the people. The Apostle Paul also demonstrated this approach, becoming “all things to all people” (1 Corinthians 9:22) so that the Gospel might be understood and received. Rather than insisting on “home culture” forms of worship or tradition, missionaries seek to express the Christian message in ways that resonate with the local worldview, values, and symbols.

Lindy will provoke us to think about our work and calling, how we position ourselves in a community as well as challenge us to think about the theology of incarnation.

The goal of contextualisation is not cultural compromise, but deeper understanding and more authentic discipleship. It requires humility, cultural sensitivity, and a strong grasp of both Scripture and the host culture. Done well, it helps avoid superficial conversions or cultural imperialism, allowing the Gospel to take root within local cultures and be expressed through their own music, art, leadership styles, and community life—leading to vibrant, indigenous expressions of faith.
